In Nephrotic Syndrome, Should We Give High Protein Diet or Not
“In Nephrotic Syndrome, should we give high protein diet or not?” some may tell you that you should follow a low protein diet, because too much protein can worsen protein leakage and put extra stress on kidneys so as to cause further kidney damage. While some may tell you that you should have high protein diet, because too much protein has gone out of body, you need to supplement protein to make up the lost protein. Which opinion is right? In this article, we will tell you the answer.

1. In patients with Nephrotic Syndrome, due to the loss of large amounts of protein from urine, the body will lack protein, and long-term hypoalbuminemia will lead to negative nitrogen balance, leaving the body in a state of malnutrition. Therefore, if you do not give a high-protein diet, it is harmful to the body, and may lower the serum protein, resulting in anemia, malnutrition, benign edema and so on. At this point, it is recommended to an adult to take 1.5-2 g/kg protein per day.

Eggs, lean meat (pigs, cows, sheep, etc.), chicken, fish, etc. should be selected. These foods contain high quality protein. The reason why they are high quality protein is that they have high biological value. High quality protein should account for 60-70% of total protein. Modern studies have shown that a high-protein diet can cause glomerular hyperperfusion and hyperfiltration, and promote glomerular sclerosis, interstitial inflammation and fibrosis. Therefore, long-term high-protein diet is not recommended

2. If Nephrotic Syndrome enters a chronic, non-severe phase, protein intake should be reduced to 0.7-1 g/kg per day for an adult.

3. If a patient with Nephrotic Syndrome has kidney function damage and nitrogen retention, and his/her blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels are higher than normal, the amount of protein should be limited to 0.5-0.7 g/kg per day for an adult.
