If you have kidney disease, a high protein diet should be avoided. But it does not mean you should stop eating all protein-rich foods. Because your body requires protein to help muscles work well and avoiding getting sick. High protein foods include meat, fish, poultry, eggs and cheese. Kidney patients who are not on dialysis need between 4-6 oz of high protein foods per day.

Are some proteins better than others?

High protein foods like meat, milk and eggs can be high in fat and cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease, your doctor may suggest you eating more heart-friendly proteins. Good choices include fish, chicken breast, low fat soy products. Also you may also need to reduce protein foods that are high in phosphorus like milk, yogurt, cheese, dried beans, nuts, seeds and peanut butter.

If I can not have protein, what can I eat?

Although your diet is limited in high protein foods, you still need to eat a variety of foods like eggs, milk, meat, poultry, fish, fruits, vegetables and grains. Consuming adequate calories can prevent muscle breakdown and weight loss.
